Introduction
The Situation
Several
practical studies on teaching strategies had been carried out to investigate
factors affecting students’ academic performance. Teachers and School
Administrators are always in the front lines when their students’ academic
performance decline.
In
the worldwide education system, one indicator of students’ academic performance
is the grades in every quarter. Such results had been equated to teacher
performance. As teachers and administrators are the ones being delegated of
having the direct responsibility upon the academic development of the learners,
they are left with no choice but to continuously seek solutions to address such
low academic achievement scenario.
For
first grading period of the school year 2014-2015, Grade 9 Peace Special
Education Students of New Nongnongan National High School was not able to achieve
promising results in their report cards most especially in Araling Panlipunan. As
the subject is knowledge-based, it requires high degree of understanding,
remembering, and retention wherein the students poorly demonstrated during the first
(1st) grading period. They might have been mentally exhausted in
answering exams and complying to the different subject requirements. Such
circumstance created some frustrations but on the positive note, signaled the
teachers to do reflective teaching and some innovations.
The
Grade 9 Peace Class is a recipient of Special Education Program New Nongnongan
NHS. The class is a composition of 42 students of which 34 are males and 8 are
females. For the first grading period, the average mean of the students for the
subject Araling Panlipunan is fifty Eight (58) which signify that they are
underperforming students in terms of academic performance.
With
this situation there is a need to take for an action to solve the low academic
performance of Grade 9 Peace students. There are unique range of resources
available for professionals working with young people is to help them achieve
their goals through change. One of such teaching resources is the use of
Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) which is designed for the students. SIM
is proven to be a highly effective engagement tool. Working together, both teachers
and students become more resourceful and achieve positive outcomes (Proctan,
2010). Thus, this study is purposely formulated to improve student’s academic
performance through the use of Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) as a
teaching strategy.
Objectives
The
study aims to:
a.
Find out the proficiency level of Grade 9 Peace students in the subject Araling
Panlipunan for the 1st quarter before the exposure to Strategic
Intervention Material.
b. Implement the Strategic Intervention
Material to the Grade 9 Peace students as an important tool in developing and
accelerating students’ academic performance.
c.
Identify the proficiency level of Grade 9 Peace students in the subject Araling
Panlipunan for the 3rd quarter after the exposure to Strategic
Intervention Material.
Statement
of the Problem
a. What
is the proficiency level of Grade 9 Peace students in the subject Araling
Panlipunan for the 1st quarter before the exposure to Strategic
Intervention Material.
b. What
are the improvements in the Grade 9 Peace students’ academic performance every
after exposure to the Strategic Intervention Material.
c. What
is the proficiency level of Grade 9 Peace students in the subject Araling
Panlipunan for the 3rd quarter after the exposure to Strategic
Intervention Material.
Significance
The
impact of Strategic Intervention Material will help the students improve their
academic performance in all of their subjects most especially in Araling
Panlipunan. Furthermore, it will enrich the facilitating skills of the teachers
and improve classroom instruction as well as serve as an effective learning
assessment tool for students’ academic development and for school administrators;
this teaching strategy will influence the thinking and practices in teaching
and learning such as gaining insights into the students’ understanding and
learning progress.
Definition of Terms
Intervention-
the
process to turn around a persistently low- achieving student or surface learner
into deep learner with the use of Strategic Intervention Material.
Strategic
Intervention Material (SIM) – is an instructional
material meant to reteach concept or topics on the Law of Supply and Demand
which are considered least mastered by the students.
Related Studies
Instructional
materials are School Resource Inputs (SRI), they include printed and non –
printed items that are designed to impart information to students in the
educational process. Instructional materials also include items such as kits,
textbooks, magazines, newspapers, pictures, recordings, slides, transparencies,
videos, video discs, workbooks and electronic media including music, movie,
radio, software, CD – ROMs, and online services (Dahar, 2011).
Instructional
material plays a very important role in the teaching learning process. It
enhances the memory level of the students and makes the teaching – learning
process interesting (Raw, 2005).
Bunagan
(2012) defined Strategic Intervention Material as meant to re-teach the
concepts and skills (least mastered). It is a material given to students to
help them master competency – based skills which they were not able to develop
during a regular classroom teaching. It consists of both learning strategies
(for students) and content enhancement (for teachers). It is a multifaceted
approach to help students to become independent and successful learners. He
further differentiated SIM and modules. This intervention material focuses on
the skill not mastered by the students during regular class. Module, on the
other hand, contained different topics included in a given chapter and intended
for regular classroom teaching and distance learning. Module requires pretest
and posttest and also includes fun activities.
Dahar
(2011) investigated the effect of availability of instructional materials on
the academic performance of students in Punjab (Pakistan). He mentioned that
instructional materials play a very important role in the teaching - learning
process. Population of the study comprised all secondary and higher secondary
schools, secondary teachers and secondary students in Punjab. A total of 288
schools, 20 students and 10 teachers from each school were randomly selected as
the sample of the study. The study used the value – added approach. School
Profile Pro forma, a questionnaire for teachers and result sheet were the
instruments of the study. Pearson correlation was used to find out the
relationship between the availability of instructional material and academic
performance of students and Stepwise Regression analysis with linear function
was used to find out the differential impact (causal – relationship). Results
revealed that availability of instructional materials has a strong relationship
with academic performance of the students.
Scope and Delimitations
The study is focused on the Grade 9 Peace students
of New Nongnongan NHS of the school year
2015-2016 under the Enhance Basic Education Curriculum.
Subject of the study
The subject of the study
is the Grade 9 Peace students of New Nongnongan National High School for the who
performed poorly in the 1st grading quarter of the school year
2014-2015.
Treatment of the data
The students will be
exposed to SIM for 3 period and each time they will be expose they have to
answer for a pre-test. Each exposure will be given for one week. During
exposures, the teacher must supervise the students and scaffolding will be
applied. After exposure, the students
will answer a post test. A comparison then of the scores in the pre-test and
the post-test will be compared to find out for possible improvements. The
Post-test and the Pre-test will be recorded and will affect the students
quarterly grade. A comparison of the 1st grading quarterly grades and
3rd grading quarterly grades
of the students of Grade 9 Peace of New Nongnongan National High School who
performed poorly in terms of academic performance will be done to test wither
the Strategic Intervention Material maid and impact on increasing the students’
academic performance.

The table above answers
this cases study problem number 1 which is to find out the proficiency level of
Grade 9 Peace students in the subject Araling Panlipunan for the 1st
quarter before the exposure to Strategic Intervention Material. It can be seen
that the students possess poor academic performance where 26 students or 62% are
classified as beginners with grades range from 75 below while approximately 14%
are classified as developing learners with grades range from 75-79. A sad truth
comes out wherein only 23% of students are approaching developing or with grade
range from 80-84.
A
comparison of the academic performance (through the quarterly grades) from the
1st grading grades (before the exposure to Strategic Intervention
Material) and the 3rd grading grades (after the exposure to the
Strategic Intervention Material) will be done to test whether the SIM made
beneficial impact on increasing the academic performance of the Grade 9 Peace
students.
Problem 2: What are the
improvements in the Grade 9 Peace students’ academic performance every after
exposure to the Strategic Intervention Material.
Problem
3: What is the proficiency level of Grade 9 Peace students in the subject
Araling Panlipunan for the 3rd quarter after the exposure to
Strategic Intervention Material.
Several
improvements were noted in the grade 9 Peace students’ academic performance
every after exposure to the strategic intervention material. The table below
shows the level of proficiency of the students in terms of academic performance
in the First Grading period (before the exposure to the SIM), Second Grading Quarter
(After the Exposure to SIM) and third Grading Quarter (After the second
exposure to SIM)

The
table above shows that there is a difference on the academic performance of the
students of Grade 9 peace after the exposure to the Strategic Intervention
Material. 26 students got a final grade of 75 below in the first quarter which
signifies them to be beginners in level of proficiency but as what has been
observe it decrease to 12 students in the second grading and no students who
got the final grade of 75 in the third quarter. This shows that there is a
significant change on the academic performance of the students and that they
improved their academic performance. On the other hand, 6 students got a final
grade of 75 to 79 in the first grading quarter and it increased to 12 students
in the second grading quarter and decres to five on the third grading quarter.
It should also be noted that there is an increased on the number of students
who got the final grad of 80-84 from the first quarter with 6 students to 12
students in the second quarter while it decrease to 15 students in the third
grading quarter. This shows that there is an increased on the academic
performance of the students. The significant change comes into the level of
advance and proficient of the students’ academic performance where 17 students
got the final grade of 85 to 89 in the third grading period after the exposure
to the SIM and 5 students got the final grade of 90 above in the third grading
period. This shows that there is and increased on the student academic
performance through the development on the increased of their final grades in
every year level due to the rigid exposure to Strategic Intervention Material.
Conclusion and Recommendations
With
the conduct of the study on the effect of the SIM to the academic performance
of Grade 9 Peace students of New Nongnongan National High School the researcher
would like to conclude the following:
1. The
grade 9 peace students performed low in the academic performance in the first
grading quarter before exposing to the SIM.
2. There
is a significant changes and improvement on the academic performance of the
students on the second grading quarter and third grading quarter all after they
were exposed to the SIM.
3. SIM
can be a good tool among the many varieties of strategic material that will
help the students in performing better in school and classroom setting.
With
the conduct of the study on the effect of the SIM to the academic performance
of Grade 9 Peace students of New Nongnongan National High School the researcher
would like to recommend the following:
1. The
used Strategic Intervention Material will improve the academic performance of
our secondary school students.
2. The
conduct of action research would help the teacher on making improvement on the
learning of the students.
